Mark R. Fowler, 58, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a remarkable ten-year battle with stage IV colon cancer. He died surrounded by the love of his family at his home.
Mark was given an estimated 26 months to live when he was initially diagnosed, but he went on to live for another decade, exceeding expectations and continuing to bring humor and warmth to the people around him throughout his illness.
Born May 24, 1968, in Macomb, Illinois, Mark was the son of Richard and Julane (Hesh) Fowler. He graduated from Rushville High School in 1986, where he was a standout athlete in cross country, basketball and track.
He later attended Augustana College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English. It was there that he met Liesl Kolp Fowler. The couple married at the college on June 2, 1990, beginning a marriage that lasted more than 36 years.

Mark Fowler’s Career and Legacy
Before becoming an attorney, Mark worked as a merchandiser for M&M Mars and Lipton & Co. He earned an MBA from St. Ambrose University in 1997 before graduating from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1999.
Mark practiced law with Califf-Harper in Moline from 2000 to 2002 and Gomez-May Law in Davenport from 2002 to 2012. He then served as an Associate Court Judge from 2012 to 2018 before becoming a District Court Judge, a position he held until his death.
Mark took great pride in his work but never took himself too seriously. His time on the bench provided him with some of the most fulfilling—and occasionally humorous and frustrating—experiences of his career.
Those who knew Mark also remembered his generosity, practicality and ability to make people laugh. He believed strongly in giving people grace and second chances, particularly to those who extended the same kindness to others.
Outside his professional life, Mark loved cooking, spending time with his family and enjoying simple pleasures. He was particularly known for his carbonara, chili and smoked pork. He also loved the Cubs, Dr. Pepper, bologna and rainbow sherbet.
Most importantly, Mark took immense pride in his family. He is survived by his wife, Liesl Fowler; children Ian (Claire) Fowler, Jackson Fowler and Karin Fowler; grandson Liam; brother Matt Fowler; nephew Rich Fowler; and numerous extended family members, colleagues and friends.
His wife, Liesl, reflected on their more than 36 years together, remembering the beautiful life they built and the years they spent watching their children grow.
Mark Fowler Funeral and Memorial Service
A celebration of Mark’s life will be held Sunday, September 6, 2026, at The Outing Club in Bettendorf. The timing is expected to be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers, the Fowler family has encouraged friends and loved ones to consider supporting Iowa Legal Aid in Mark’s memory.
